165 Technology Innovators from Kenya’s 14 Lake Region Economic Bloc Counties to Drive Food Security Solutions
165 Technology Innovators from Kenya’s 14 Lake Region Economic Bloc Counties are set to Develop Smart Food Security Solutions and Undergo Accelerator Training.
Panelists for The IREN Technologies and Innovation Challenge 2018 (ITIC-2018) have selected 165 innovators, from over 295 applicants, to undergo an accelerator training that will help them develop and showcase smart food security technologies and innovations to a wider market. The 165 hail from Kenya’s 14 Lake Region Economic Bloc Counties. The training commenced in June in the respective counties and will run through to October 2018.
The successful applicants aged 18 and above from Bomet, Bungoma, Busia, Homa Bay, Kakamega, Kericho, Kisii, Kisumu, Migori, Nyamira, Nandi, Siaya, Trans Nzoia and Vihiga have joined their respective County Technology & Innovation Solution Hubs to conceptualize, develop and ultimately pitch their smart food security solutions during the ITIC-2018 Trade Fair later in November, 2018.
The best hub from each county will compete with fellow top hubs in participating counties to determine the overall top three hubs that will stand a chance to win seed capital to further scale up their innovations and technologies. The hubs will also be beneficiaries of the business meetings, networking, exhibition and award gala that will involve educational institutions/NGOs and for profit organizations resident in the Lake Region Economic Bloc counties.

The ITIC 2018, an initiative of Inter Region Economic Network and the Friedrich Naumann Foundation, aims to promote smart food security solutions for the 14 Lake Region Economic Bloc Counties. Other objectives of ITIC 2018 include:
-To offer individuals, educational institutions, private companies and organizations a platform to showcase technologies and innovations that promote food security.
-To identify scalable food security compatible technologies and innovations for use
by farmers and MSMEs in agribusiness value chains.
-To develop county-based Technology and Innovation Solution Hubs that offer a platform for development, actualization, and uptake of technological and innovative solutions.
The ITIC 2018 secretariat welcomes interested educational institutions, NGOs and for profit organizations resident in the Lake Region Economic Bloc counties to partner, network and showcase their smart solutions during the ITIC-2018 Trade Fair in November 2018.

Official Launch of the IREN Technologies and Innovation Challenge – 2018 (ITIC2018) for Kenya’s 13 Lake Region Economic Block Counties
The Inter Region Economic Network has launched the IREN Technologies and Innovations Challenge-2018 (ITIC2018) in partnership with the Dar es Salaam based Friedrich Naumann Foundation. The ITIC2018 targets13 counties that form Kenya’s Lake Region Economic Bloc. The challenge follows a 2 month study in the region that focused on the use of technologies and innovations to bolster food security in the region.
The ITIC2018 Challenge is the Fourth edition of the on-going IREN focus on food security topic. In 2014 IREN managed a youth in agribusiness idea challenge that involved 22 Sub-Saharan Africa countries dubbed Agribiz4Africa; the Young Innovators in Agribusiness that focused on youth from East Africa and Ethiopia in 2015 and the East Africa Postharvest Technologies Challenge in 2016 – 2017.
The ITIC2018 Challenge will facilitate the formation of County- based Solution Hubs. Each of the Solution Hubs will take participants through the processes of identifying a challenge, developing solutions, developing prototypes and to pitch to potential partners and financiers. The competition will be between 39 County Solution Hubs.
Entries are expected from individuals (aged 18 years and above who reside in the Lake region economic basin counties and have attained at least secondary school education). They will be grouped into IREN County Solution Hubs to develop Technology and Innovation Solutions. The County Solution Hubs will compete and the top providers of scalable technologies and solutions invited to the IREN Technologies and Innovations Trade Fair.
